The starting point for the Yamaha YTR-9445NYS trumpet development process was to clearly outline the design and performance objectives of this Custom Artist trumpet. Both the development artist Robert Sullivan and Yamaha custom shop manager Bob Malone felt that this Custom Artist Model trumpet would need to have a sound based on the best vintage instruments currently in use by players in top American orchestras. In addition the performance characteristics specifically would need to be compatible with the New York Philharmonic sound as well as The Cleveland Orchestra. Since the project originated while Sullivan was a member of the New York Philharmonic, and his subsequent move to the Cleveland Orchestra, this blend with both orchestral brass sections was extremely important. The design centered around a traditional C trumpet configuration using a standard mouthpipe (non-reversed style) with a short taper.
